Learn to Navigate 13th April 2019 (Pollock Park/Glasgow)

On our learn how to navigate courses you will learn the basics of navigation using a map and compass. Don’t worry if you don’t have any experience, this course is perfect for you! On the course you’ll learn some of the basic map symbols, how to relate what is on the map to the ground, and how to follow simple routes. You will also have a look at some basic compass skills. We keep the group size small to allow you the best experience. You don’t need any pre-existing knowledge for our introductory navigation courses, and we will work through the course at a pace which suits everyone group.
We begin the day indoors, looking at the basics. You’ll get a chance to see different map types and scales, and we’ll look at how the map depicts the landscape. We’ll introduce you to the parts of a compass, and the basics of how to use it. When we head outdoors and put into practise everything that you’ve learned! We’ll look at some vital techniques, which will allow you to place yourself on the map.
What gear will I need ?
You should dress for a day in the hills. We’ll send you a suggested kit list in your welcome pack. But some of the equipment that you’ll need includes waterproof jacket and waterproof trousers, spare warm layers, lunch and perhaps a hot drink. Don’t worry about bringing a map or compass- we’ll provide those on the day. We also have some waterproof jackets and trousers which may be hired for a small additional charge.
How fit and experienced do I need to be?
This is our introduction navigation course, so we will keep things simple! You need to be fit enough to spend the day walking on good paths around a countryside parks and rolling hillside. You don’t need any previous hillwalking or mountaineering experience.
What’s included in the price?
Instruction by a qualified mountain leader, the use of require maps and compasses for the duration of the course, and a certificate to attendance.
Who will my trainer be?
Our instructors have years of experience teaching people how to navigate. All of our supervisors are Summer Mountain Leaders and hold an outdoor first aid qualification. Aside from that we’re a diverse bunch from a wide range of backgrounds- teaching and youth work, to laser engineers! Rest assured that our team are all friendly, dependable and qualified individuals who love the outdoors and making sure that you have the best possible experience on our navigation courses.

Is this course accredited?
This course isn’t accredited- it is designed as an informal introduction to navigation. If you are interested in an accredited course at a similar level, then have a look at our Bronze National Navigation Award Scheme course.
