Our learn how to navigate courses are designed complete beginners. It is a self contained course which will give you an understanding of the basic of using a map and compass, while minimising the jargon. We keep the group size small to allow you the best experience. You don’t need any pre-existing knowledge for our introductory navigation courses, and we will work through the material at a pace which suits the group.
We begin the day indoors, looking at the basics. You’ll get a chance to see different map types and scales, and we’ll look at how the map depicts the landscape. We’ll introduce you to the parts of a compass, and the basics of how to use it. When we head outdoors and put into practise everything that you’ve learned! We’ll look at some vital techniques, which will allow you to place yourself on the map.
You should dress for a day in the hills. We’ll send you a suggested kit list in your welcome pack. Don’t worry about bringing a map or compass- we’ll provide those on the day.
You will need to be fit enough to spend a day walking on good paths and rolling hillside. No previous hill walking or mountaineering experience is required.
Instruction by a qualified mountain leader, the use of require maps and compasses for the duration of the course, and a certificate to attendance.
Our instructors have years of experience teaching people how to navigate. All of our supervisors are Summer Mountain Leaders and hold an outdoor first aid qualification. Aside from that we’re a diverse bunch from a wide range of backgrounds- teaching and youth work, to laser engineers! Rest assured that our team are all friendly, dependable and qualified individuals who love the outdoors and making sure that you have the best possible experience on our navigation courses.
