Open expeditions are a fantastic way to meet new people or to complete your DofE expedition if you can’t make the dates of your school or youth club. They are open to both individuals and groups. Our practise/qualifying expeditions run over five days; with one days of training and a four day practise expedition. We run introductory and planning sessions over the internet, this allows you to meet the rest of your team, plan the route and ensure that you have everything that you need. Once you’ve booked you will be send a comprehensive welcome pack.
Our Open expeditions start on Monday morning in Rothiemurkus Campsite and run over 5 days. We recommend that you arrive on Sunday Evening.
Day 1. In the morning you’ll meet your supervisor and the rest of your group (although you will have spoken to them online). We’ll run some team building activities, look at the basics of camp craft (it’s more than just putting up a tent!), learn some basic map skills, cover emergency procedures and cook on stoves. We will also finalise the plan for the expedition route.
Day 2- Day 5. On the morning of day 3 you will head out on your practise expedition! As a group you’ll follow your route while being remotely supervised by your supervisor. The group will wild camp on both nights of the expedition. At the end of day 5 you’ll have a meeting with your supervisor for a group and individual debrief before heading off home.
Expedition training, supervision and assessment by our staff. Accommodation on the Monday night is included (accommodation will be at a serviced campsite). The use of essential safety equipment such as group shelters, emergency phones, and a group first aid kit. The use of maps, compasses and route cards. You’ll also receive a welcome pack and an expedition training booklet.
You’ll need to make your own travel arrangements to and from the campsite (Coaches and Trains regularly run to Aviemore, which is a 10 minute taxi journey or an hour walk away). You will also need to provide your own food and expedition equipment. We have a selection of tents, rucksacks and stoves which can be borrowed (Please contact us for availability). You must also be registered for your Gold DofE and provide your edofe number when booking, should this present a difficulty please don’t hesitate to get in touch.
Our supervisors have years of experience delivering DofE Expeditions. All of our supervisors are Summer Mountain Leaders, who hold an outdoor first aid qualification and have completed the DofE Expedition Supervisors Training Course (ESTC). Aside for that we’ve a diverse bunch from a wide range of backgrounds- teaching and youth work, to laser engineers! Rest assured that our team are all friendly, dependable and qualified individuals who love the outdoors and making sure that you have the best expedition experience.
Your DofE Gold expedition should be about you and your group. You should be self-sufficient. As a team you make decisions and look after yourself- your supervisor isn’t going to tell you when to take breaks or camp. Your leader will remotely supervise you; meaning that you won’t always be able to see them but they will have a good idea of where you are and how you’re getting on. Your supervisor will periodically meet with you throughout the day.
Please note that an expedition needs a minimum of four participants to run. If, three weeks before the expedition, we don’t have enough participants we will be forced to cancelled the expedition. You will receive a complete refund or the option to switch expedition dates. We recommend ensuring that you have comprehensive travel insurance.
